Picking a registered office address often looks like a formality rushed through at the end of the incorporation process. It is in fact a structural decision, and a registered office address in Paris opens four very different routes in terms of cost, commitment and credibility. Here is what the mechanism actually covers, what the law requires, and which criteria settle the choice.

What a registered address actually covers

Registering an address means giving a company an administrative and tax address, that of its registered office. It appears in the articles of association, on the company register extract and on commercial documents. It determines the competent court in the event of a dispute, the tax office in charge and the relevant chamber of commerce.

A point that is often misread: French commercial law separates the registered office address from the place where the activity is actually carried out. A company can therefore be registered in the 9th arrondissement and work from an office floor located elsewhere, or from several sites. A registered address is neither a lease nor an occupancy right.

The four options available in Paris

The director’s home

This is the cheapest route, and the most tightly framed. Since the law of 2 August 2005, a legal representative may set the registered office at home with no time limit, unless a legislative provision or a contractual clause states otherwise. A residential lease or a building bylaw that objects brings the arrangement down to five years maximum.

The downside is twofold: the personal address becomes public, and any client, supplier or competitor can look it up.

The registered address provider

A specialist company supplies an address and handles the mail, with no workspace attached. This is the dominant offer on Paris searches, with low entry prices and a fully online sign-up. The service is generally limited to receiving, scanning and forwarding mail.

The business centre or workspace

Here the address is attached to a real venue where the company has desks, meeting rooms and a staffed reception. The registered address becomes a service on top of occupancy rather than a standalone product. This is the setup offered by flexible workspace operators, which allow a company to move its registered office to the space where its offices are .

The commercial premises

A conventional commercial lease settles the address question by construction. It is the heaviest and most expensive route, usually reserved for activities that receive the public or need dedicated floor area.

What the law requires you to check

The registered address market is regulated, and not every provider offers the same guarantees. Three checks are enough to rule out non-compliant offers.

First, a prefectural approval is mandatory to operate as a registered address provider. It carries a number, which serious operators display address by address. An address without an approval number exposes the company to a refused incorporation.

Second, the contract must be written and concluded for three months minimum, renewed by tacit agreement unless terminated. The provider must supply premises including a room suitable for ensuring confidentiality, and keep a file for each company registered there.

Third, failing to meet these obligations is a fifth-class offence, punishable by a fine of up to 1,500 €.

What a registered address costs in Paris

Plain address offers start around 15 € excl. VAT per month in central arrondissements, with tiers around 20 € for mail scanning and 30 € for regular forwarding. Traditional business centres sit well above, in a range of 35 to 79 € excl. VAT per month.

Three items inflate the real bill beyond the headline rate. Sign-up administration fees first. Mail forwarding next, often billed per shipment rather than included. And finally the deposit, requested by some operators.

This pricing is not comparable to that of a desk: a registered address grants no occupancy right. For the orders of magnitude of a full office setup, the detail sits in our analysis of coworking prices in Paris .

Choosing the arrondissement, and what it changes

No arrondissement confers a legal advantage. A Paris registered office does, however, produce two concrete effects.

The first is reputational. An address in the 1st, 2nd, 8th or 9th reassures in markets where location reads as a signal of solidity, notably consulting, finance and real estate. The effect has a limit: the best-selling registered addresses host thousands of companies, and a simple search on the street number reveals it.

The second is fiscal, though far less mechanical than commercial arguments suggest. Without premises of its own, a company falls under the minimum local business tax contribution, whose base is voted by the municipality of the registered office and varies with turnover. Moving to a municipality with a lower minimum base can cut the bill, but the saving advertised in adverts only holds for certain profiles.

The most frequently overlooked criterion remains the real accessibility of the venue for teams and visitors. The gaps between districts are detailed in our comparison of where to locate offices in Paris .

Plain address, or address attached to offices

This is the real dividing line, and it goes unnoticed in most comparisons.

A plain registered address answers an administrative need. It suits companies with no premises, fully remote activities, holding companies and early-stage businesses that want to shield their director’s personal address for a few dozen euros a month.

As soon as a team occupies offices, the logic flips. Making the registered office and the workplace coincide avoids maintaining two addresses, two mail circuits and two different answers to the question of where the company is based. With flexible workspace operators, the registered address sits among the optional services attached to the membership, which removes the separate contract and the extra supplier.

A registered office address with no venue behind it holds until the first client meeting, the first hire, or the first partner visit. That is when the mismatch is paid for.

The choice therefore depends on the occupancy timeline more than on the budget. A company planning to rent offices within six months is better off handling both questions together, rather than signing a registered address contract it will have to terminate. The sizing criteria are covered in our guide on choosing between a private office or open space .

The formalities, in order

The sequence is stable, whichever option is chosen.

  1. obtain proof of address: contract and registered address certificate from a provider, proof of ownership or lease for a home or premises;
  2. write the address into the articles of association, before they are signed off;
  3. file the incorporation application on the single business formalities portal, attaching the proof;
  4. update the address across all commercial and contractual materials once incorporation is granted.

For a transfer during the life of the company, the decision of the competent body and the amendment of the articles come before the filing, with a legal notice publication depending on the legal form. Allow a few weeks and a formalities cost, which argues for an address that will hold for at least two to three years.

Frequently asked questions

Can a company be registered at the director's home in Paris?
Yes. Since the law of 2 August 2005, a legal representative may set the registered office at their home, unless a legislative provision or a contractual clause states otherwise. A residential lease or a building bylaw that forbids it limits the arrangement to five years maximum from incorporation. After that, the company must provide another address or face removal from the register.
Which Paris arrondissement should be chosen for a registered office?
No arrondissement carries a legal advantage. The choice comes down to the image conveyed to clients and to accessibility for teams and visitors. The 1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th hold most of the so-called prestigious addresses, and therefore the highest rates and the addresses most heavily used by other companies.
Does a registered address reduce the local business tax?
Not mechanically. Without premises of its own, a company falls under the minimum contribution, whose base is voted by the municipality of the registered office and depends on turnover. The gap between two municipalities can be significant, but the headline saving advertised by some providers only holds in specific situations. The calculation is worth checking with the tax office.
How long does it take to obtain a registered address certificate?
Online providers advertise a contract and a certificate within a few hours to a few days once the file is validated. In a business centre or a workspace, the timing follows that of the membership. The certificate is required to file the incorporation application.
Can the registered office address be changed later on?
Yes. Transferring the registered office requires a decision by the competent body, an update to the articles of association, a filing on the single business formalities portal and, depending on the case, a legal notice publication. The process is common but it has a cost and a lead time, which is why the first address should not be picked lightly.
